A very interesting book on a Civil War Surgeon
To all,

This book is diary with much detailed about the life of a 42 year old (pretty old back then) Surgeon (1st Lt...thus a acting assistant surgeon) in the Army of the Potomac in 1862 to 1863. A very interesting story is when his is captured by CSA forces in battle. A CSA soldiers also comes up to him (he is looking for wounded) and tried to shoot him at point blank range. A misfire saved his life. Later, R.E. Lee returns his personal item and lets him return to Yankee lines.

A bit slow at times for for history buffs or reenactors (I play a Union Surgeon in the ACWA.org), then a grand book indeed.

Sincerely,

I remain your humble servant, Major Arthur Henrick.

Teach Your Baby Spanish (Teach Your Baby Series)
Published in Audio Cassette by Holt Concepts (April, 2000)
Authors: Caren Crandall, Ruth Ball, Diana Conejo, and Holt Concepts
Average review score:

Fun Spanish with baby
I ordered this audio cassette so that my 5 month old son and I could learn some Spanish words together. I also wanted to expose him to a foreign language at a young age. We play the cassette in the car and I repeat the words out loud both in the car and around the house. It is a lot of fun and I highly recommend this tape. The tape includes many "baby" related words and phrases that you wouldn't know from Spanish class. It also comes with an insert that has all the words and phrases from the cassette written out. The cassette and insert also offer "teaching tips" on how to help your baby understand the meaning of the Spansih words.

Teach Your Own
Published in Paperback by Delacorte Press (November, 1989)
Author: John Caldwell Holt
Average review score:

A treatise from the "granddaddy" of homeschooling
In this unofficial treatise for the homeschooling movement, John Holt, longtime private school teacher, maintains that the traditional classroom model no longer works and may, in fact, ruin kids for learning. He exhorts parents to challenge the conventional wisdom and be their children's teachers. You don't need to be a homeschooler to benefit from Holt's books; you simply need to care about children and education and to have uttered, if only once, "There's got to be a better way."

Thoughtprovoking, useful, and extremely important!
If you will only read one book on education, make it this one. In this book Holt makes a convincing case for homeschooling, explains how to go about it and shares some of his wonderful insights about learning. The book is filled with real life stories of homeschoolers, which makes everything much more tangible.

Trouping America
Published in Paperback by Meridional Pubns (May, 1992)
Author: Bonnie Holt
Average review score:

interesting theatrical memoir
Trouping America is a first hand look at one of the many theatrical companies toouring the country from the turn of the century, until the movies became the primary source of entertainment for most Americans. This is the story of two such actors, Floy Mann and Fred Byers, who traveled all over the USA, Canada and into Mexico to entertain with their plays and vaudeville. I found the many illustrations very interesting, and it told me about a type of theatre not very well documented. Lots of fun.

UML (Unified Modelling Language) for Systems Engineers
Published in Hardcover by IEE Publishing (15 October, 2001)
Authors: John Holt, John Holt, and Dr. John Holt
Average review score:

The first non-software UML application book
Jon Holt explains how to use the UML not for software systems, but for any system.
One point that Jon makes is that systems engineering has its multitude of inherent problems. Complexity, communication, understanding, and quality are all problems, which can be addressed by using a common communication tool. Unfortunately, 99.99% of all books on the UML are written for Software engineers. This makes it seem that the UML is only for SW engineering. This is extremely misleading, as the UML is just a language. By using a common tool, it is much easier and efficient to communicate to all team members so that the amount of confusion is reduced and the right solutions can be generated the first time.
Another concept is that UML contains all the tools necessary to model your systems. Static and behavioral modelings are explained in a through systematic way that includes both high level and in-depth coverage. All aspects of the UML are covered in depth and shown with examples that make this book one of the best desktop references available.
A final important point is through the use of numerous examples; the UML can get your job done. Jon shows examples including the modeling of standards, processes, and procedures. He shows how to model requirements and how to use extensions to allow the UML to model future problems. By showing how to model standards and compare them to an enterprises processes, it makes compliance documentation almost effort less.
In conclusion, "UML for systems engineering" by Jon Holt tells about all the aspects of the UML needed for real systems engineering. My opinion of the book is that if you are not working on a software project and are looking to see how the UML can work for you, then this is the book for you.

The Universe Explained: The Earth-Dweller's Guide to the Mysteries of Space (Henry Holt Reference Book)
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (October, 1994)
Author: Colin A. Ronan
Average review score:

Explains it Better Than My College Textbook
Invaluable to the astronomy student with little or no scientific background. Each topic (with a catchy title) is covered on the open two pages, with lots of photos, diagrams, and visual analogies (see the push broom on page 134). Excellent topical cross references on each right-hand page. The most difficult concepts for a non-physics major made simple, such as "hyperbola" demonstrated by a golfer on a putting green. I logged on Amazon to order this book since I've renewed it from the state library as many times as they will allow. I wish it was in print!

One of the Best Books I've Read
I read this book some years ago and still reread it often. Ms. Holt, in my opinion, wrote some of the most memorable romances ever written. I was fortunate to find this copy and must say that it is worth finding. One of the best romances I've read.

Waiting in the Wings
Published in Audio Cassette by Soundings Ltd (May, 2000)
Authors: Doreen Tovey and Margaret Holt
Average review score:

Adjusting to life after the death of Charles in Somerset
'Waiting in the Wings' is a departure from Doreen Tovey's usual style of writing and approach to her subject matter. This book is the culmination of the development of the theme of the life she lived with her husband Charles and their animals in the Mendip Hills of Somerset and consequently is one of the best she has produced so far. Unlike most of her previous works which focus mainly on the idiosyncrasies of the cats and Annabel, the donkey, the focus of this book merges with that of her relationship with Charles. His death and the gradual process of adjusting to a life without him are the main theme of this book. As the author comes to terms with her loss she learns how life continues to go on yet never losing the feeling that Charles is never far away. Her natural and easy humour that is a well known trademark of her earlier works is still very much in evidence as she adjusts to learning new skills and asserts her determination to continue living in her isolated cottage. The cats and Annabel continue to provide plenty of embarrassing and wonderful moments as well as sadness but throughout the book Mrs Tovey never looses hope. Her struggles with learning to drive, holidays with her caravan, whitwashing and redecorating the cottage, her researches into her husband's family tree, encounters with spiritualism and interest in the life of T.E. Lawrence are just some of the many incidents and activities she continued to be involoved with after Charles's death. Her friendship with Derek and Jean Tangye (of the Minack Chronicles) and Joyce Fussey (author of the Westwath books) is mentioned for the first time along with her continuing interest in the happenings of people she encounters in her everyday life, especially her Aunt Louisa and neighbours in the village. This work is not only inspirational and entertaining but also is evident of Mrs Tovey's matured style without losing sight of the humour that is so characteristic of all her earlier works and one looks forward to what else she will produce in the future.
